David was alarmed, for the troops spoke of stoning him; for they were all bitter at the loss of their sons and daughters. But he took courage and put his trust in the LORD his God.
(1 Samuel 30:6)

King David was a great warrior and from a young age had to face great challenges. But David was not always strong: he also faced moments of persecution, fear and anguish. Despite the sadness and having to bear the consequences of his failures, David never forgot the ways of the Lord.

In the midst of persecution, David sought his safe refuge in God. The king had God as his reference, there was nothing and no one in his life that could replace him. David's life leaves us with a great teaching: God is our refuge in times of tribulation. He does not forsake us!

God wants us to take refuge in him. By taking refuge in the Lord we recognize his strength. When we seek God in the face of danger we are recognizing that he is our security. Neither the world nor money nor the strength of our own arm is able to give us the protection that God gives us. "...For he shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou find refuge: his truth shall be thy shield and thy bulwark!" (Psalm 91:4).

Seeking the Father's protection

  • Seek intimacy with God, take a moment each day to commune with him in prayer.
  • Be sincere with God. Open your heart before him. He is your true friend.
  • Strengthen your faith in God. Read God's Word and you will receive strength.

To pray:

Lord, you are my strength and my protection. In you I find security and peace for my soul. Keep me in your arms. Amen.
