Since you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
(Colossians 3:1–2)
Do you resemble more an eagle or an ostrich? The eagle is a majestic creature, known for its extraordinary vision, and is a symbol of strength, power, and glory—even in the Bible. The ostrich, on the other hand, is a large bird, built for heat and speed, but it cannot fly. Its nature limits it to the earthly realm. It depends on the ground beneath its feet and becomes vulnerable when its head is—quite literally—in the dirt.
There are many analogies out there comparing these two animals, but here we simply want to draw your attention to this:
Set your mind on heaven!
Though we live on earth like the ostrich, our true home and ultimate goal should be in the heavenly realms. Fly high, just like the eagle.
Our new nature in Christ allows us to experience the fullness of heaven—soaring by faith, prioritizing what truly matters, and living as citizens of heaven.
Set Your Mind on Things Above
-
Examine your focus: The world narrows our vision and makes us forget what truly matters.
-
Change the way you think and live: Strive to become more like Jesus.
-
Meditate on heavenly promises: Reflect on how temporary life on earth really is.
-
Pray and feed on the Word daily: God renews your strength like the eagle’s.
-
Remember: Despite the ostrich’s strengths, it cannot fly on its own. It is Christ who lifts us to the heavenly places. Stay humble and grateful.
-
Stand firm in God and His power: Don’t cling to the small things of this world.
Prayer
Lord my God,
Help me to think and live as someone who is destined for heaven. Teach me not to cling to the temporary things of this world. Give me strength to focus on what truly matters—to love You above all else and to love those around me.
I pray this in Jesus’ name,
Amen.
